Diagnosing and Treating Pets with Neurologic Disorders

Neurologic disorders of dogs and cats include problems affecting the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral nervous system.

  • Common brain disorders of pets include:
    Seizures (due to epilepsy or other neurologic disorders)
  • Inflammatory brain disease
  • Brain tumors
  • Cognitive dysfunction (a common neurologic disorder of senior pets, similar to Azheimer’s
    disease)
  • Congenital problems
  • Common spinal disorders of pets include:
  • Disk ruptures (a very common neurologic problem in dogs, less common in cats)
  • Spinal tumors
  • Inflammatory disorders
  • Congenital problems
  • Peripheral nervous system disorders are not as common as brain and spinal cord disease and include
    abnormalities of:
  • Nerves
  • Muscles
  • Neuromuscular junctions (where the nerve “talks” to the muscle

Dr. Curtis W. Dewey is EPV’s neurologist/neurosurgeon and has decades of experience diagnosing and treating dogs and cats with neurologic disorders. He is a graduate of Cornell University (BS, DVM), and is board-certified in both neurology (DACVIM-Neurology) and surgery (DACVS). He has lived in the Ithaca area for over two decades. Dr. Dewey has published numerous articles dealing with neurological disorders and has introduced several treatment (medical and surgical) options for dogs and cats with neurologic problems. At EPV, we offer state-of-the-art diagnostics and therapy options for dogs and cats with neurologic issues. We are one of very few centers in the region with MRI capability. We also offer digital radiography (x rays), thermal imaging, cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) analysis and more.
